There is no justification by Railways to charge such high cancellation charges. For some the cancellations may be genuine. One of my relative was booked in Vande Bharat. But on the day of boarding he had to be admitted to a hospital for heart attack. But money to Railways has gone!. Will the railways give back a part of the booked amount if it reaches its destination late?. more
Presumably the cancellation charges account for use of service, online or offline, and perhaps to compensate marginally for vacancy caused due to cancellation of journey. Latter may be ok in case of a confirmed ticket. However, charging irrationally in case of cancellation of a wait list or RAC ( unconfirmed) ticket appears unacceptable. These days, normally no train finds any berth vacancy and therefore, the wait list or RAC rarely gets confirmed. The railway experiences no loss due to this as full capacity of a coach is utilised, most of the times. Current reservation facility also helps in filling vacant berths. Therefore, the cancellation fees should be made rational and nominal only to cover the cost of service rendered in booking and cancellation. The basis of charging huge cancellation fee and fixing different rates for different classes is also not known. This perhaps makes good revenue yield to the railways which registers regular losses for various reasons. Issuance of large no. of WL tickets even where no confirmation is likely and where eventually will be huge cancellations, leads to impression that cancellation process is being used to augment revenues. more
I had unpleasant experience with this. My tatkal ticket got automatically cancelled due to non-confirmation. In this condition too, IRCTC deducted cancellation charges. This is daytime loot. more
