All fruits in market are artificially ripened

Attached is a fruit seller near where I live in Delhi. Talking to the lady about whether these fruits are naturally ripened or been violated with chemicals, she tells me everything she gets is either ripened with chinese pouch or carbide, all mangoes.

LocalCircles platform has been the place for voicing these issues but the Govt has failed us all on this matter.

Ban and Enforcement is only part of the solution and not sustainable. We need to find a a solution that is based on market forces. I.e make naturally ripened affordable and available so much so that carbide wala no one touches.

How can this be done?! more

There are practical problems in storage and transportation. All fruits are plucked when they are near ripe. They are 'gassed' after they are sold in the wholesale market to the agent. While calcium carbide releases acetylene gas, this is a very old way of ripening fruits and vegetables. There are several other sprays and gases which speed up ripening like Ethylene Gas or Ethephon (2-chloroethylphosphonic acid - an ethylene releasing compound), Ethylene glycol, potash or even smoke chambers with higher carbon dioxide. India needs better storage and disposal systems to reduce artificial ripening. However, all over the world there is no simple solution to this which comes at a low price. Are we willing to afford fruits and vegetables at 3x or 4x the current price? Probably not!! We may pay fancy prices for imported fruits and vegetables - but not for safer fruits and vegetables. more
Uts just not possible to sell naturally ripened fruits to consumers. If ripen bananas, mangoes from are loaded at Hyderabad in train/truck for sale in Punjab or Jammu, they will rotten intransit. However, some safe method must be developed to take care of this continuing problem. more
